Every year on April 22, Earth Day is celebrated globally as
a day to raise awareness and take action on environmental issues. This year,
the theme is "Invest in Our Planet: Get Inspired. Take Action. Be a part
of the green revolution." In line with this theme, the Africa Farmers
Media Centre is working tirelessly in Uganda to revolutionize the agricultural
sector and promote sustainable agrifood systems.
Agriculture is the backbone of Uganda's economy, employing
over 80% of the population and contributing significantly to the country's
Gross Domestic Product (GDP). However, the sector is facing numerous
challenges, including climate change, soil degradation, and low productivity.
The Africa Farmers Media Centre, a non-governmental organization, is working
with small-scale farmers to address these challenges through sustainable
agriculture practices.
The organization is promoting the use of conservation
agriculture, which involves minimum tillage, crop rotation, and the use of
cover crops to improve soil health and fertility. They are also introducing
drought-tolerant crops and promoting the use of irrigation systems to ensure
that farmers have a constant supply of water, even during dry spells.
The organisation is working with over 40 village savings and Loans association were its impacting over 12,000 farmers in 5 districts of central Uganda.

In addition, the Africa Farmers Media Centre is working with
farmers to improve their access to markets and increase their income. They are
promoting the use of value addition techniques to increase the shelf life of
perishable crops, such as fruits and vegetables. This is enabling farmers to
sell their produce at higher prices, improving their income and livelihoods.
The organization is also promoting the use of renewable
energy sources in agriculture. They are introducing solar-powered irrigation
systems, which are cheaper and more sustainable than traditional diesel-powered
systems. This is reducing the cost of irrigation for farmers and reducing their
dependence on fossil fuels.
The Africa Farmers Media Centre is also working to raise
awareness on environmental issues among farmers and the wider community. They
are using media campaigns and community outreach programs to educate people on
the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable agriculture.
In conclusion, the Africa Farmers Media Centre is making a
significant contribution to promoting sustainable agrifood systems in Uganda.
Their work is aligned with the theme for Earth Day 2023, which calls for
investment in the planet, taking bold action, and implementing solutions
equitably. By promoting sustainable agriculture practices and renewable energy
sources, the organization is helping to mitigate the impact of climate change
and improve the livelihoods of small-scale farmers. We can all learn from their
efforts and support the green revolution.
